What To Look For
Besides finding a boot that will accommodate your foot shape there’s a few things to be on the look out for. You should consider:
- The recommended skill level for the boot
- How comfortable it is
- Other factors like width and price
Every ski boot comes with a “flex” rating and this measures stiffness; the stiffer the piece of equipment the more advanced the skier wearing it should be. For men, a beginner should look for a flex of 80 and below, intermediate’s want between a 80 and 100 and an advanced skier should have a flex over 100. For women, a beginner needs a rating under 60, intermediate’s between 60 and 85 and advanced over 85.
After that, you want to make sure the boot you select is very comfortable. I’ve experienced uncomfortable ski boots before and know how miserable they can make the day. They can cause a lot of pain too. The product you select should have high quality liners and be easy to put on and take off.
Lastly, you should consider the width of a boot or its “last.” If you have a narrow foot you need a last of 97mm or 98mm (check out my top picks for narrow footed skiers), normal width is between 99mm and 101mm and people with wide feet need a last between 102mm and 106mm (check out my top picks for people who happen to have wide feet).
